EYFS Provision Ideas: Six Halloween Activities

EYFS Provision Ideas: Six Spooktacular Activities for Little Learners! ๐ŸŽƒ๐Ÿ‘ป

Halloween is the perfect excuse to add a little extra magic to the classroom! From pumpkins and potions to spooky spiders and colourful creations, there are so many opportunities to bring seasonal fun into provision whilst supporting children's learning and development.

This year, I wanted to create a range of Halloween-inspired activities that were simple to set up, engaging and full of opportunities for independent exploration.

I've put together six Halloween provision ideas that focus on fine motor development, creativity, early writing skills and plenty of hands-on exploration. The best part? Most of these activities use inexpensive resources that you might already have tucked away in your classroom cupboards.

๐ŸŽจ 1. Potion Painting Using Bottle Tops

For this activity, I set out some green paint, recycled bottle tops and cauldron pictures to create a simple but effective painting invitation.

Rather than using traditional paintbrushes, the children could experiment with dipping bottle tops into the paint and printing onto their paper. The circular prints and marks helped create the illusion of bubbling potions spilling out of their cauldrons!

What you'll need:
- Recycled plastic bottle tops
- Green paint (or other spooky colours!)
- Cauldron pictures or plain paper
- Shallow paint trays

I particularly love how open-ended this activity is. Some children created carefully placed bubbles, whilst others covered their entire page with a wonderfully messy potion!

๐Ÿง› 2. Pumpkin Picking with Vampire Teeth

This has to be one of my favourite Halloween fine motor activities! Using little glittery pumpkins that I found at The Range and plastic vampire teeth, I created a pumpkin-picking challenge with a spooky twist.

The idea is simple: children use the vampire teeth like tongs to pick up the pumpkins and move them from one place to another.

It sounds straightforward, but controlling the teeth and gripping the pumpkins requires plenty of concentration and coordination!

What you'll need:
- Plastic vampire teeth
- Mini pumpkins, pom-poms or similar objects
- Trays or containers

It's a brilliant example of how a simple novelty resource can transform an everyday fine motor challenge into something children are excited to try.

๐Ÿงน 3. Broomstick Bead Threading

For this activity, I used colourful pipe cleaners to create broomstick shapes and provided a selection of bright beads for the children to thread onto them.

The colourful beads really stood out against the spooky theme, making this a lovely, inviting activity that encouraged children to sit, concentrate and create.

What you'll need:
- Pipe cleaners in different colours
- Colourful threading beads
- A tray to organise the resources

**Try this:** Add an extra mathematical challenge by encouraging children to create repeating colour patterns, count their beads or compare whose broomstick has more or fewer.

 ๐ŸŽƒ 4. Pumpkin Observational Drawing

I absolutely love using real objects as inspiration for drawing, and pumpkins are perfect for this! I gathered a selection of pumpkins in different shapes, sizes, colours and textures, alongside autumn leaves, paper and pencils. The children could spend time looking carefully at the pumpkins before having a go at drawing what they could see.

What you'll need:
- Real pumpkins and gourds
- Paper
- Pencils
- Optional autumn leaves and other natural materials

It's a lovely opportunity to develop pencil control, visual discrimination, creativity and confidence in drawing. I love that every child's finished drawing was different, reflecting their own observations and developing artistic skills.

✨ 5. Spooky Sequin Fine Motor

A little sparkle always makes an activity more exciting!

For this Halloween-inspired fine motor invitation, I used spooky sequins, black paper and glue to create an opportunity for children to explore mark making in a different way.

The children could create lines, swirls and patterns with glue before carefully placing Halloween sequins along their marks.

What you'll need:
- Black paper
- PVA glue
- Halloween-themed sequins or confetti
- Glue bottles or applicators
- A shallow bowl or tray

Encourage children to create different types of lines, including straight, curved, zigzag and spiral patterns. These movements are all useful foundations for letter formation.

๐Ÿ”จ 6. Pumpkin Golf Tee Hammering

This one is always such an exciting activity because it involves real hands-on exploration! Using pumpkins, colourful plastic golf tees and child-friendly hammers, I created a Halloween hammering challenge.

The children could carefully position the golf tees on the pumpkins and use the hammers to tap them into the surface. It's a brilliant activity for children who enjoy practical challenges and using tools.

What you'll need:
- Real pumpkins (I re-used the ones from the drawing activity!)
- Plastic golf tees
- Child-friendly hammers
- A tray or secure working surface

Hammering helps children develop hand-eye coordination, grip strength, wrist stability and controlled movements.

Adult supervision is important for this activity, alongside clear expectations for using the tools safely.

Why I Love Halloween Provision in EYFS

One of my favourite things about teaching in Reception is finding ways to bring a little excitement into everyday learning. Halloween provides so many opportunities to do exactly that!

What I particularly love about these six activities is that they aren't simply about making something to take home. They're about the process of learning — exploring materials, developing physical skills, making decisions, solving problems and having fun along the way.

These activities also offer plenty of opportunities for adults to interact with children, introduce new vocabulary, model language and extend their thinking through conversations and questions.

I hope these ideas have given you some inspiration for your own Early Years classroom, whether you're planning a full week of Halloween activities or simply looking for a few new invitations to play.

Happy Halloween and happy exploring! ๐Ÿงก
