Let’s be honest, how many of us actually read the labels on products we use? Similar to reading how many calories there are in food products, we don’t pay attention until it becomes really important to us. Even if we read the labels, we look to avoid ingredients we are allergic to, and seldom go further than that. But what about ingredients we overlook that can be harmful for our skin?

Parabens

Found on pretty much every label listed as methyl-, butyl-, and propyl-paraben, this group of preservatives are added to keep the products safe and free from germs. However, a 2004 study revealed that parabens can be found in samples of cancerous breast tissue, which means that it should be used cautiously. In addition, these ingredients also mimic estrogen in the body thus contributing to hormone imbalance.

Aluminum compounds

Found in antiperspirants, aluminum compounds are used to reduce or completely stop the body from sweating by stopping the sweat ducts from releasing sweat in the first place. Regardless of how much you may dislike it, sweating is natural and it does good to your body. By stopping your body from sweating, you are clogging the pores and sweat ducts, while aluminum chloride and  chlorhydrate can be linked to an increase in breast cancer cells.

Sulfates

Many shampoos, body washes, and facial cleansers are filled with sulfates. Not only are they harsh detergents that can help clean your skin, but they will also strip the hair and skin of their natural oils in the process. When you wash your skin with these products and get that dry and real tight feeling afterwards, it is a sign that you should steer clear of them and try something milder. What is more, they can cause eye and skin irritation.

Dioxins

For those who usually read about controversial and potentially dangerous chemicals, dioxins are a known ingredient already. They are linked to cancer and highly toxic to organ system, while also interfering with endocrine systems and affecting human development. The most dangerous thing is that they will not be listed as an ingredient on a label, but if you know what to look for you will know with which ingredients they are linked (triclosan, PEGs, and sodium laureth sulfate). In addition, they can be found in non-organic tampons because cotton used to make them is sprayed with pesticides. Being incredibly persistent compounds, they can stay in our bodies long after we have stopped using products that contain them.

Is there alternative?

You can always choose not to use beauty products, but let’s face it – it is less likely. Another option is to find real organic and mineral makeup which is made of natural ingredients only. Brands like Youngblood, Physicians Formula or Benecos are known for their natural ingredients and are safe to use even if you have extremely sensitive skin or rosacea. In addition, you can always choose to make your own body scrubs, lip balms, and face masks right in your kitchen. This way, you will be sure there are no added artificial ingredients.

Buying makeup and beauty products is fun and it makes us happy, but there are things we should keep in mind first: are these safe for us and are they cruelty-free? It would be shame to use products which are tested on animals and which can do you more harm than good. Be informed and do not make decisions lightly, but rather read labels and be careful!
